KETV vs. Cox Dispute Gets More Attention

The Omaha World-Herald has published two letters in the past three days in its "Public Pulse" section from readers frustrated by the dispute between KETV and Cox Communications over the retransmission rights of KETV's high definition signal over Cox's digital cable tier:

Get dispute resolved
Prior to the Husker football season, I purchased a 73-inch high-definition television so my five sons and I could watch the Huskers in style.

Much to our disappointment, there has been a dispute between Cox Communications and Hearst-Argyle Television, the parent company of KETV. A call to KETV left me with no clear picture as to what is causing the problem with the lack of an HD signal. Meanwhile, four consecutive NU games have been aired on ABC.

With the Colorado game and the Big 12 championship game coming up (also set to be televised on ABC), please, someone, do something.

- Richard Webber, Papillion

Customers ill-served
I am in complete agreement with Richard Webber (Nov. 20 Pulse) with regard to the high-definition signal dispute between Cox Communications and Hearst-Argyle Television, the parent company of KETV. Continuous calls to both companies seem to fall on deaf ears.

Like Mr. Webber, I own a large HD-capable television and must suffer through an analog signal for Husker games and other ABC programs. Now I know via the KETV Web site that you can simply purchase the proper antenna and receive the HD signal free of charge. This, however, is impossible in my neighborhood because of its elevation anda number of large trees.

It is too bad that the customers of KETV and Cox Communications are made to suffer while these two companise attempt to work out their differences. I am certain I speak for a large number of people when I say to Hearst-Argyle and Cox Communications, "Make something happen, and think about your customers before you start to lose them."

It's heartbreaking to hear owners of a 73 inch HD TV "suffering". During this holiday season, I hope you somehow...in all this mess..find the happiness within life's smaller moments instead.

My prayers are with you during this very difficult time.

PS - If either of these guys were very smart, they'd by large HD sets with built in HD tuners. Pressing "7" then "." then "1" can be difficult though for most Husker fans to figure out..I understand.

The dispute is Ketv wants Cox to pay for a free signal and Cox doesn't want to because they already don't charge thier H customers except for renting the box. If Cox ends up pay the cable bills will be higher for everyone.

KETV & Hurst SUCK!!!!!

Will never watch news and hope the rating go down, down, down. Even before this I thought KETV was the "trailer park news".

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Those viewers can watch high definition programming from KETV through an antenna. Also, they would have been yelling about the fact that only the Texas and USC games were actually shown in HD by ABC, the others were in analog. And what about CBS? Why can't they get all of their NFL games in HD? FOX has no problem covering all of their games in HD.

It's too bad Cox doesn't just import another ABC station's signal into Omaha. Des Moines' WOI-TV or even Lincoln's KLKN-TV are the closest to Omaha. That way, everyone can just leave KETV and greedy Hearst-Argyle to twist in the wind. Eventually, they would have to come around or go under.

They can't it's already been asked byme to cox and they said KETV hold some ind of rights to the ABC signal.

Then maybe a boycott of Hearst-Argyle stations and contacting their sponsors with threats to boycott them might be more effective. Otherwise, this could go on for a long time.

Why is this getting more attention now than when CBS (The Masters, March Madness, etc...) withheld its HD signal?

Because ABC carries Nebraska football

C'mon, these are the problems you want to have.

Boo hoo.

Nobody cared about the HD problem when Channel Third was holding out because nobody watches them.

How many times do people have to be told that they can still watch the games in HD. The HD TV does not need cable to recieve an HD signal.

There is a reciever/HD antenna inside the HD tv if you bought one with it inside. Then you can watch the freakin' Huskers all you want with your superior TV.

If you bought an HD TV and it doesn't have one of those recievers, you probably didn't do enough research before you bought the damn thing, you yuppie freaks.

Don't worry, you can still buy one for relativley cheap. And I'm sure it won't be too much of a financial burden on you to spring for something you should have bought in the first place, since you could afford a 73 inch HDTV.

You poor baby, boo hoo.

I am disappointed with BOTH Cox and Hearst-Argyle stations. As usual the people are the ones that this hurts. With NO notice, we no longer receive ABC stations. I blame Cox for this.... I blame Hearst for their selfish corporate tactics BY INCREASING fees for a signal we can get free with the appropriate antenna.
