NSAA Decision Draws Firestorm of Criticism
On Lincoln Journal Star's Website

Journal Star photo by Ted KirkThe Nebraska School Activities Association's decision to proceed with the girls high school state basketball tournament as scheduled was not a popular one, judging by comments on a Lincoln Journal Star story posted on the newspaper's website.

Among the comments:

"Yet again the NSAA makes a decision that the lives of students are less important than the scheduling of a tournament. These people should be ashamed and should never be put in a position to make decisions that could affect people's lives."

"Schools are closed because it is bad out, so let's put the kids in more danger and continue with the b-ball games. A real smart decision. Who is going to be blamed if someone gets killed? I would love to be the lawyer for that one."

"The NSAA is just like corporate America today. Sit in their offices making stupid decisions. They have no common sense."

KETV.com is also inviting viewers and readers to chime in on the Omaha Westside girls basketball team's plight Thursday. School officials decided to drive to Lincoln Thursday morning, rather than leave for the tournament and stay overnight Wednesday.

I think it's absolute BS that they didn't postpone the game! Unfortunatly it's going to take a fatality for change to happen! I agree with the comment about the NSAA acting like corporate America. It just makes me physically ill to think that a damned game is more important than people's safety!

Whatever, the only group of people complaining are Westside folks. Once again, they don't take responsibility for their own choices. They want the world to bend on their command. The school administration and parents chose not to take their girls/daughters down Wednesday night. Roncalli had the same information as the rest of us and chose to go down on Wednesday. Grow up! Realize that if the girls hadn't have gotten to Lincoln for the game, it wouldn't be the NSAA's fault! (The Journal/Star doesn't count - They just want to sell papers)

Who makes up the NSAA? Answer: Schools. Who's participating in the state tournament? Answer: Schools. The schools made the rules and should live by the rules. Don't shoot the messenger.

This was a hissy fit, fan & media wise, about something the group did to themselves. Here's the solution: Change the bylaws to allow Sunday games for next yr and beyond. Problem solved. If they don't, we're gonna have the same hissy fit again next yr.

No matter what the NSAA does, it would get criticized. It's probably not as easy as simply rescheduling. You have 48 teams in town for the tournament. You have tournament workers (many volunteers) for the weekend. You have several play sites that may not be available. It may have been simply less disruptive to everyone to play the games as scheduled under rules that were known in advance to everyone.
