A letter in Wednesday's edition of the Omaha World-Herald's Public Pulse section criticizes the newspaper's decision not to report on the inaugural Omaha Entertainment Awards last Thursday, Jan. 4.
Writes F. David Codr:
Last Thursday, I was among about 1,000 supporters of the Omaha entertainment scene who gathered for a black-tie gala at the Holland Performing Arts Center for the first Omaha Entertainment Awards to honor artistic performers in three disciplines. While nearly every local news organization was on hand to cover the event, The World-Herald was sadly missing that night.
I find it insulting that a newspaper that claims to support the local arts and entertainment scene couldn't be bothered to cover a regal, black-tie event held a block away from its offices. National performers such as actor John Billingsley and musician Conor Oberst felt the event worthy of their presence. So did Mayor Mike Fahey and other supporters of the arts.
My hat is off to the organizers and participants of this great event. They have done our community and the arts proud. Everyone I spoke to had a fantastic time.
I look forward to the 2008 Omaha Entertainment Awards and hope The World-Herald will consider it worthy of coverage.
WOWT-DT (Cox Channel 248) and KXVO (Cox Channel 11) both produced live coverage of the event, while The Reader (a sponsor of the event) and The City Weekly newspapers each published stories and the list of winners.

I caught 5 minutes of this Oscar wannabe show. More like "snoozeworthy".
John Billingsley? Is that the kid who was in "A Christmas Story"? I don't know who that is. Should I? Why don't I know who that is? Now, if you got that slow kid, Jared from the Subway commercials to attend, I'd be there in a New York Minute.
I think they meant John Beasley the local actor. No it wasnt the Oscars but the parts of the telecast that I saw weren't that bad.Im not a die hard fan of the local arts/entertainment scene but I think it was worthy of coverage by the OWH.Im not sure how you can claim to cover the local arts scene and not be there. If I remember correctly Mike Kelly did have something about it in his column. In general when you look at the comments on most topics on this blog they are negative and critical -- I for one will give the OEA and the stations that did live coverage a little credit for trying something a little different. Much more creative than the whiny unfunny drivel coming from these posts.
Another happy Omyhawn writes in to the Barely-A-Pulse.
I thought that the event was a great idea. The only problem was I didn't hear about it until it was over. I was glad to see that most of the media outlets covered it though.
Maybe they need to bring in the big guns, like Bob Balaban. That would shake-up some people.
I can imagine like most award shows, this one was probably not so interesting for the at home viewer. To those of us who were there and had interest in the nominees, it was just grand!! It was fun to dress up, see the performances and faces of those very talented people from our fair city, and watch them get recognized. And it was nice to see Mike Kelly from the OWH in the front row and then to read the nice comments in his column. I agree that it would have been interesting to read about some of the nominees before the award show, but that is politics for you. The OWH wasn't asked to sponsor the event. Oops. I am sure the Omana Entertainment Awards people will jump through the OWH's hoops for next years ceremony so we can read all about it!!
