ESPN Classic Contest Anoints 1995 Huskers
All-Time Greatest College Football Team

ESPN Classic ContestESPN Classic (Cox Channel 226) viewers voted the 1995 Nebraska football the "all-time greatest college football team" in a contest that culminated Wednesday night.

An ESPN panel of experts selected the best 32 college football teams of all-time, then asked ESPN Classic viewers to help crown the greatest team ever. The Huskers had three of the eight quarterfinalists (the 1971, 1983 and 1995 teams) and advanced the 1971 and 1995 teams to the final.

In the end, the 1995 Nebraska squad prevailed over its 1971 counterparts. The 1995 Huskers received the most votes in every round, dominating opponents much like they dominated Florida in the Fiesta Bowl, where they won 62-24.

According to ESPN, Nebraska fans rallied the 1971 team in the closing seconds to "just barely inch by" the 2004 USC and 2005 Texas teams. In the final, Coach Tom Osborne's 1995 squad proved too much for Bob Devaney's team, winning by 65 percent of the vote.

Travis Justice had some great audio from last night's show on his radio program today.

I can't believe how Kirk Herbstreit (sp?) went off, basically spouting his anti-Husker bias.

Whack, whack, whack......
Who cares? It's ancient history - just like NU's ability to compete in football with the elite programs in D1.
