World-Herald News Department Moves Tuesday

The Omaha World-Herald newspaper moves its editorial department into its new building at 1314 Douglas on Tuesday.

The news department will occupy the entire seventh floor of the 16-story building that it purchased from Qwest Communications for $25.6 million in April. Qwest leases eight floors, with the first two floors of the 26-year-old building serving as common areas.

The World-Herald's two-story building at "World-Herald Square" has been the newspaper's home since 1948. A decision on its future has not yet been announced.

The real issue here is whether competing media will give this move any attention.

This is the state's largest and oldest newspaper. It has been housed at the same location for more than 50 years. Sounds newsworthy. But I can't see the World-Herald doing the same for a TV or radio station.

Here's how the story for Tuesday night's broadcast should read:

A 'LOCAL NEWSPAPER' MOVED OUT OF ITS BUILDING TODAY. THE OMAHA-BASED PUBLICATION IS MOVING INTO A BUILDING THAT FORMERLY HOUSED THE COMPANY THAT PURCHASED THE NAMING RIGHTS TO THE OMAHA ARENA.

Doubt the OWH's quality will improve.

Been there...that's funny..didn't think of that....the O W-H moves into the building that belonged to the company who bought the naming rights to the new arena, and the W-H refused to call it by that name.
