McFayden Debuts Monday On KXVO News

Brian McFayden Miss Teen USA PicOne month and a week after his unofficial "tryout" on KXVO (Cox Channel 11), Brian McFayden was announced as the new host of the "KXVO 15 10:00 News."

McFayden will make his debut Monday night, which coincides with the launch of a revamped format and a new virtual set. Former KXVO 15 10:00 News anchor Calvert Collins shifts to a reporting role, focusing on "Heartland Underground" stories, KXVO News Director Allen Beckner said. She will also fill in for McFayden on his days off. Jo Giles will continue to solo anchor weekends and the rest of the news team will remain the same, Beckner said.

In a press release, Beckner said McFayden’s strong ties to the Omaha-area and outstanding experience will add a new level of excitement and passion to the newscast.

"Brian’s passion for Nebraska is incredible," Beckner said. "He has so many great contacts in the community and he really cares about what happens here. There is no doubt that the viewer will see that. His enthusiasm is contagious and we are all excited about having him on board.”

McFayden is a Ralston High School graduate whose resume includes a wide variety of national television experience, including hosting "Cupid," "Beauty and The Geek," "SNAFU," and "Superstars USA." He has also made appearances on "Dawson's Creek," "MadTV," "Grounded For Life," and "Sabrina The Teenage Witch." McFayden also spent three years on MTV as a VJ hosting "Total Request Live," "Hot Zone" and "MTV News."

The first show was marginal, at best. I was really hoping the show would be awesome. The virtual background was an improvement from the high-school-looking cardboard, however, still looked like the background of a cheaply made local commercial. The graphics weren't that much different, and I feel sorry for Tyson that he's such a great meteorologist and has those crappy graphics. The format of the show was a huge improvement. But why was Brian shouting the whole time? And for being such an "experienced" anchor, he sure flubbed quite a bit. I also felt like his cross talk was straight from TRL. The live shots came in very fuzzy, and I think Calvert does a better job when she has a TelePromTer. I like that J.J. was live for sports from a local event unlike the other stations, but didn't really cover any other sports... like that fact that a decent football player is leaving NU. Kind of important in Omaha/Lincoln. The sit-down with The River guy and the MOS's were a good idea in theory, just seemed a bit contrived. And for goodness sake, if you show a band playing... DON'T edit video of people singing over audio of no singing. Perhaps all the money going into Brian McFayden's paycheck could go to better graphics, equipment and editors. But I applaud everyone's effort into making KXVO better, especially while most of the crew works KPTM as well.

The old KPTM morning show looks like the Today show in comparison...

Do you really think KXVO spent a lot of money on McFayden? He was a marginal "celebrity" even at the height of his fame. I'm guessing he was out of work and looking to take ANY paying gig, even one at KXVO. Why else would anyone of his supposed "star power" come back to Omaha and take a job at a station no one watches?
