KMTV Offers 'Edwards Trial Blog'

KMTV[Updated March 21, 2007]
KMTV (Cox Channel 5) is offering a blog to help viewers follow the court case of Christopher Edwards.

The "Edwards Trial Blog" will be written by Bill Kelly, a former WOWT (Cox Channel 8) reporter who is now a senior producer for NET Television (Cox Channel 12). Kelly is researching a documentary on criminal forensics.

Edwards is accused of murdering his former girlfriend, 19-year old Jessica O'Grady. She went missing May 10 and her body has not been found.

I thought Bill Kelly worked at WOWT?

Applause to KMTV. I am certain that they intend to do a "trial blog" for every murder in the city of Omaha. And not just the sensational "young white girl" murder trials.

i think it's messed up. it's one thing to sensationalize and make a special graphics package for the trial, but this is over the line. i just hope to god the o'grady family doesn't accidentally come across the blog.

i meant it's BAD ENOUGH to make the graphics... that's not good either.

Instead of a blog, why don't they put man power into finding her? I believe that would be in the public interest,or is my thinking screwed up?

They've kept it respectful by not including O'Grady's picture on all graphics associated with trial coverage.

Anyone who sees it different is probably mad they didn't think of it.

As for the person who asked if their thinking was "screwed up." Yes it is. Wouldn't it be in the public interest if we all were vegetarian, and rode bikes to work? Yes it would, but that's not reality.

Blogging is and that's why you participate in one.

Plus you can't comment on this one, so it's just another perspective.

It's stories like this make wake up in the middle of the night sobbing..."oh Ted Brockman...wherefore art thou".

Yes by all means lets have Bill Kelly work as a private investigator and find the body. And we'll all live happily ever after in Fairy Tale Land as well. Maybe the weather guys could get together and work on an anti-tornado machine and the sports guys could dream up some great plays for Coach Callahan.Yes your thinking is screwed up and whacked out. Believe me I am not a fan of KM3 but its an out of the box idea and I give them credit for being creative.

This looks like a job for the Bob Loblaw Law Blog.

Bill Kelly indeed worked for WOWT. I was part of an explorer group he lead at the station. Not sure if he ever previously worked for KMTV.

The real Bill Kelly here. I figured I might set the record straight. Yes, I was with WOWT as a reporter for a number of years. I'm now producing documentaries for NET Television. My latest project is what brought me to this trail. We've been following a Masters level class of CSI specialists getting their training for the past six months. The program will air this fall. The Edwards trial, with it's strong use of forensic science is an interesting example of real world application... it's advantages and risks.
As for the criticism of the blog as sensational or something that would upset the O'Grady family, I'll let the writing speak for itself. I've always prided myself on keeping the emphasis on the education, analysis, and perspective. If you like it, or have concerns, feel free to drop me a line at the email address listed at the top of the KM3 blog.
