Behind The World-Herald's Creighton U. Coverage

From top: Omaha World-Herald cover page (design by Josh Crutchmer), back page (design by Tim Parks), cover story (design by Ben Vankat), inside photo page (design by Tim Parks) and inside double truck (Crutchmer).

On SportsDesigner.com, Josh Crutchmer explains the collaboration behind the Omaha World-Herald's special sports section which previews the Creighton University men's basketball team's NCAA Tournament games.

Crutchmer writes: "Among the highlights: Tim Parks getting the white type atop registration black on the Nick Porter poster to read as though it came from a laser-jet printer ... Ben Vankat wrestling a 35-inch story to the ground with little help from me ... and Dave Elsesser, me and photographer Rebecca S. Gratz cutting out the masks from foam board the night before Friday's photo shoot ... the pop-culture page toppers, which include the Bluejay mascot ('What's your best pick-up line? I usually just wing it.') ... and getting buy-in on the theme from the entire Creighton team."

Unfortunately, even the World-Herald's state-of-the-art printing presses cannot do justice to the excellent design. Saavy marketers at the newspaper would be wise to have the section printed on high-quality gloss paper stock and sell it as a souvenir collectible.

Its interesting that these guys all post their work on websites. For who? Are their egos really that big that they need to stroke them this much?

Can you imagine if every TV reporter in this market did the same thing on YouTube? What is with these print media geeks? Or is it just the losers at the World Herald?

A bigger bandwagon has never rolled this earth. The level of exposure for a team that has won two whole first round NCAA games (none after that) in the Altman era is sickening.

I agree that there is some degree of that going on, but at the same time, what else should they focus on locally in regards to the NCAA tourney?

UN-O and UN-L aren't even playing anymore.

To me, they're taking hold of something local and going with it. A bit much at times? Perhaps.

It will all die down after they lose to Nevada, though. And, if somehow they manage to get by the Wolfpack, they'll be devoured by the Tigers of Memphis.

It's a story - for now. College baseball hasn't really reached full gear yet, so they have to cover something.

The funny thing is that I'm guessing 95 percent of the people who are reading this blog are seeing those pages for the first time. Nobody subscribes to the fishwrap anymore.

I guess the World Herald has to fill the sports section with something in between recruit signing and spring practice, sprained ankle reports.

In regards to the "bandwagon" bashers; I've got news for you, I've been in several cities over the years and it's the same everywhere you go. Nebraska and Creighton don't have a lock on it. Get out a bit more, would'ja.

I can't wait to see the 32-page special section the World-Herald puts out when the Husker football team finally wins a Big 12 Championship game.

It's only the losers at the World-Herald that post their stuff online. Everyone else is above that.

The World-Herald sucks. And the employees who read this blog know it.

Go to sportsdesigner.com or newspagedesigner.com. Most designers post their stuff. It's a good tool for feedback and creative input from others in the industry.

Speaking of tools, anonymous posters at 5:27 and 5:36 fit the bill.

If you read any of the comments on the sites, it's stuff like, "Great design!" and "This looks awesome."

Some feedback...

Nick Porter looks like Aaron Neville.

A good deal of email is tossed back and forth between a lot of people. Input is generally a little deeper than what's on message boards.

You guys here anything about the plumbing at the World-Herald?

I hear it's the worst.

The Nevada/Creighton game will be seen by the 2nd smallest segment of the country. Vanderbilt and George Washington has the smallest.

Something like only 6% of the country will carry the CU game as the "main" game the that time slot.

That's because they're using their own paper to wipe with. It's what the rest of the city does...
