New KMTV Anchors Debut Tonight

Carol Wang, courtesy of KMTVCarlo Cecchetto, courtesy of KMTVCarol Wang and Carlo Cecchetto make their debut as evening news anchors on KMTV (Cox Channel 5) tonight on "Action 3 News at 5."

Wang most recently worked for KXAS (NBC) in Dallas/Fort Worth. Cecchetto comes from KFMB (CBS) in San Diego.

The pair replace veteran anchors Deborah Ward and Greg Peterson, whose contracts were not renewed last month.

What an interesting experiment. I wonder if Journal paid for a focus group? I can't wait to see the comments after tonight's show. Break a leg.

Just a prediction...

At least one of these two will be gone within six months.

Yikes. This phrase in the Carol Wang KMTV bio strikes me as slightly disturbing:

"Carol says she’s been fortunate to have a front row seat to many incredible stories including the space shuttle Columbia explosion, Presidential visits" and so on

Um yeah...The space shuttle blows up on your beat. That was some rare good luck smiling on you that day.

She is married to Jim Wang.

Carlo said "He’s looking forward to diving into this community and finding where he can be of service to others."

He would be the first in the area media that wants to serve Omaha. Per his read, man he is kind of a suck up.

I'll give him a chance but not sure about Ms. Wang.

and these two will bring up the ratings....get rid of two of the best anchors and replace them with these two...what where they drinking...

It's Carol!

It's Carlo!

No, it's Carol!

No way, it's Carlo!

Way! ...

Stop! You're both right! :)

Seriously, only time will tell. No, I was not blown away, but no, I was not majorly turned off either.

Oh well ...

Why does 3 refer to its breaking news as Breaking News Now? Isn't breaking news already now? I know they like to call stories that happened 8 hours ago breaking news, maybe they are creating new subdivisions of what breaking news is. Maybe they can create levels of breaking news and color coordinate them, like the Homeland Security alert system. Breaking news now is red. Breaking news hours ago is yellow. Breaking news yesterday is blue.

Well... I saw it... and just when you thought this market was growing up... it takes two steps back. One highlight; I finally got a chance to watch the "terrible Trav" (I don't think he's half bad!) But what was a dissapointment were the two new hires. They looked sadly out of place for main anchors and more closely resembled one of the many weekend anchor teams in town. Wang seemed especially nervous and had a few stumbles (to be expected), and her comment to Trav, "I'll learn all my sports from you", makes me think, "does she know anything about sports?" As far as Carlo, smooth enough, but a bit shallow.

I'll give the pair about 5-years to gell... about the same time they'll be leaving town. Out.

Probably the same shit as you.
Replace the two main anchors from a station that's been last for years... That's unheard of!!!

I didn't know Andy Rooney read this blog?

Trav, quit surfing the web at work and do your job. Your horrible.

So, where's Ted now that we really need him!

well someone didnt like deb and greg....well you must have been drinking better then i....and anyway the station is the problem not deb and greg...so get over yourself...

First impressions: the new guys aren't bad at all. No distracting mannerisms or anything like that. But they aren't THE TEAM TO WATCH, either. The tabloid-like, in-your-face format just doesn't work. They still have Dave (I'm on crack, hear me roar) Roberts and Devon (Help me pry my jaws loose) Patton yelling and flailing about like convulsing gibbons. And this new informed anchor bit where the anchor asks one question and then the reporter answers and ends his/her report with "Reporting LIVE, Blah Blah Blah, ACTION 3 News." Isn't everyone getting sick of REPORTING LIVE and BREAKING NEWS from all the stations? It's almost as bad as the COMING UP NEXT bumps, which are nothing but fillers so that stations don't have to report any more news (because they can't find any). But what still remains KMTV's downfall is the fact that they haven't gotten rid sports director Travis Justice on the air. He's not good! He comes across as arrogant and opinionated. And he's not an attractive man--at all! Nix the tabloid crap, Roberts, Patton and Justice and Channel 3 might be competitive once again--and not just with KXVO.

Final thought: Good luck to Carlo and Carol...you're gonna need it. And watch your backs over on Mockingbird...there are several who are so threatened by your arrival...and with good reason.

I agree with Nebraska Newsie about the live reports. They have the anchor ask one question and then end the report with a standard out. It sounds contrived as hell! At least when 7 does that "informed anchor" crap, the reporter tosses it back to the anchor who will give them some awkward "thank you." Network news is just as bad, so you KNOW that some worthless consultant has their hands in that muck.

Does anyone else reading this blog think consultants should be categorized as low as lawyers on the scum scale?

These guys are pretty good! But getting rid of Greg was totally stupid.... Greg is a big league material!

Anonymous said...

Carol and Carlo??? Are you serious???? That sounds like some other classic combos -- Amos and Andy, Luci and Dezi, Rowan and Martin -- or maybe even the name of a morning radio team -- like...Todd and Tyler???

Well, maybe they'll be funnier than TnT...which really shouldn't take much effort.

But Carol needs to back away from getting all her sports knowledge from Fatrav...she'd be better off learning from one of the interns than getting anything relevant out of that space between T.J.'s ears...LOL.

I thought Carlo and Carol did a fantastic job -- they were actually pleasant to watch. Rob and Julie are tired anymore and WOWT has just gone down hill. I'll definitely watch Carlo and Carol, but will turn it off before Trav comes on.

Anonymous said...

They did a good job for their first gig as an main team. Way better than WOWT and their news team is seasoned! Carol Wang looks alot older than I thought she would but has great stage presence.

My new Omaha news choices in order. KMTV for weather and news minus sports. Ketv for sports minus all the hype stories and filler, too much. Kptm and Kxvo for the weather at 9 and ten and the funny spots on kxvo. WOWT does nothing for me anymore.

Anonymous said...

the only good late night news on WOWT is Jay Leno :)

God Greg was good. Real good. He was excellent at his job and letting go of him is one reason I probably won't watch channel 3 anymore. Ward was good too for being around 25 years.

I understand why they're making changes but these 2 new anchors aren't anything special. I think they're trying to get a foreignish female anchor to pull off a Pat Persaud kind of deal. I give her maybe 3 years before they fire her for Christmas. Carlo isn't bad but he has some big shoes to fill. I think he might do a good job and end up making himself an excellent anchor. Still Greg Peterson > New guy

Anonymous said...

Since when did two reporters think they could replace two of the best anchors KMTV 3 has ever had ? Or I guess I should say when did station management think they could replace Greg and Deb. It's not the anchors that needed replaced. It's the stations management team (If thats what you could call them) that needs replacing. But what do I know ? Since Rob and Julie will now be my news anchors.

I thought Carol and Carlo did a good job their first night. I will definitely be watching them again. WOWT has become a joke, and KETV isn't on high def anymore so I hardly ever watch them, and when I do Farah Fuzal really gets on my nerves. I'll watch Carlo and Carol for the news and turn it to either 7 or 6 for the sports. I was pleasantly surprised with how good they actually were.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the above. I watched the new anchors and I thought they were professional and polished. A welcome addition to the Omaha news line-up. I'll definitely be watching them. Welcome to Omaha Carlo and Carol!

Actually, I think he is a much better fit as the sports anchor than as the know-it-all-at-large "World According To Me" commentator.

While I was taking my morning crap, I was listening to TnT and they were talking with Trav about boring radio and television. Trav got on and he quoted the "arrogant and opinionated" line from above.

I agree, Trav is much better as sports guy rather than opinion blowhard. By the way, how much money did Channel 3rd blow in pushing Trav the opinionator?

I don't care that much for Trav but he is okay as a sports guy (he isn't bad but he isn't anything to write home about); however, I really don't understand why he gets as many opportunities as he does regarding radio, Sunday night sports show, For What It's Worth, Bluejay Basketball, TnT, etc... Does he get big numbers? Is his off-camera personality so much better than his on-camera personality that people magically like him and are willing to spend gobs of cash promoting him?

Wowt news is on lifesupport.

KMTV has had really low ratings cant wait to see if the improve and if what wowt and kptm will do?

Anonymous said...

Would the mother of the above blogger please put junior to bed.

I still think they had their best anchor right beneath them in Kerri Stowell and they don't use her enough. Maybe she looks so good because she is usually paired with Devon Patton. I think I'd be good next to him!

Anonymous said...

She is freakin' HOT!

Anonymous said...

Kerri Stowell would be hot, if not for her bad lip job.

Anonymous said...

Carol and Carlo are no better than average. Deb and Greg put them to shame and actually brought elegance and credibility to that joke of a station. These two blare "affirmative action hires", and they're not nearly as good as the competition...they lack personality, charisma and knowledge.

As for Kerri Stowell, if you can get past her Angelina Jolie-wannabe lips, her "S" hiss is the most annoying. Everytime I watch her, I'm too irritated after five minutes to keep watching.

Anonymous said...

I did not enjoy watching Carlo and Carol,I liked Deb and Greg much better my new station is KETV the weather is more accurate and the sports directer is better and not a jerk like TRavis J, He sucks KMTV should of got rid of him. WOWT sucks they put me to sleep.

Anonymous said...

How is KETV's weather more accurate? Last time it snowed, they forecast 10-16 inches of snow several days beforehand. WOWT is better, biotch!

Anonymous said...

Let's give Carol and Carlo a chance. I'm still in shock that KMTV didn't make them change their names to sound more "midwestern", a la "Carol Winters" and "Carl Swanson". Or maybe that was an Emmis thing that Journal dropped. Remember Julie Marquez (pronounced "Marcus")?

Anonymous said...

I think that Carlo looks like he could be WOWT Jim Seidleki's better looking brother.

Anonymous said...

I found this quote from another message board and thought it to be funny but true:

"Firing the anchors at SuperUltraMegaActionNews and not firing Travis Justice reminds me of the final episode of the Mary Tyler Moore show where everybody but Ted Baxter gets fired.
Sure, fire the competent ones and keep the blowhard buffoon on the payroll. Great move, Journal Broadcasting."

Anonymous said...

"Wowt news is on lifesupport."

You have to wonder, is Gray Television following Emmis' gameplan? Look at who's left WOWT, who WOWT has hired. Does Gray just see WOWT as a high-rated, market-leading station that it can bleed until the ratings are in the crapper, then sell?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone watched WOWT this last week? It's like they forgot to renew the lease for spell-check software. It seemed like every newscast I watched had at least one spelling goof. Even the anchors were making fun of how they spelled 'quail' as 'qual' on the screen during the Sports segment. How sad.

Anonymous said...

Let's play a game: Name the anchor team you think that would catapult KMTV to #1 ratings. Any current or past on-air Omaha/Lincoln TV folks are game.

For example, you could choose Pat Persaud and Lee Terry Sr for main anchors, Michael Scott for sports, and Dean Wysocki for weather.

See if you can do better than Journal.

Anonymous said...

Anchors:
Deb Ward or Carol Schrader and Greg Peterson
Weather:
John Campbell
Sports:
Anyone but Travis!
For What It's Worth:
Rosanne Rosanna Danna

"I think they're trying to get a foreignish female anchor to pull off a Pat Persaud kind of deal."

"These two blare "affirmative action hires",..."

Is Omaha this much of a racist cesspool?

While eating dinner out, folks at another table were speculating that Carlo was hired so the Hispanic people would have someone like them to watch.

If you check his bio, there's nothing in it about him being Hispanic.

Seriously, folks. Grow up!

Seriously...quit taking yourself so seriously. You're blowhard crap is easy to detect.....Travis!
