Don't Count on KMTV When It Comes
To Delivering Breaking Sports News

No one should mistake KMTV's promise of delivering "Breaking News" for reality when it comes to sports.

Case in point: Friday's 10 p.m. newscast on "Action 3 News."

With Millard North and Lincoln Southwest deadlocked at 45-45 heading into a state playoff record fifth overtime, sports reporter Matt Siegel reported live from the site of the game, Buell Stadium. The outcome was still hanging in the balance when Seigel joked that he was glad he got paid by the hour, then tossed back to Sports Director Travis Justice for more highlights and scores.

Following a commercial break and a brief weather update, KMTV news anchor Greg Peterson used the final seconds of the broadcast to report that Millard North had won the game in a sixth overtime, 51-45.

Meanwhile, competitors WOWT (Cox Channel 8) and KETV (Cox Channel 9) provided viewers with live reports of the stirring finish.

On WOWT, veteran sports reporter Ross Jernstrom turned into a play-by-play announcer, calling the action as the game's final two plays transpired.

KETV returned from its commercial break with live coverage in time to show Millard North's racous celebration, followed by sports reporter Matt Schick's update of the final score.

Obviously posted by a channel third employee

Trav and Channel Third probably didn't want to be at any high school game in the first place. Trav has expressed a dipleasure with covering high school games in the past (save three games per weekend) because they don't think anybody in the Metro cares.

now thats "clearly to the point".

It should read...
Nobody in the metro cares about Travis or Channel 3rd

Before we start the bashing, maybe there is something to be said for not going all out for high school football. If you were really that interested, wouldn't you be at the game? It's not like a Husker game that sells out...we're talking about high school football here...

What is going "all out" anyway?

There were TWO games at ONE site that day. How hard is that? And isn't Millard South about two or three miles from their station?

If high school football is so important, why don't I see highlights at the beginning of the the 10 o'clock news? Maybe it's because there might be more community changing events needing to be covered than a 16 year old's touchdown completion. But what I do I know?

I think the point that some are trying to make (and Sean) is that the football game was happening as the news was going on.

Why NOT show the finish? If the other two stations showed it, why couldn't Channel Three?

The decision not to go live was a call made by one of several inexperienced, young, alcohol/drug-abusing members of the KMTV staff. You'd be amazed at what goes on behind the scenes. Hell, the producer may have been in a drug-induced stupor when it came time to go back live. It's embarrassing, really.

Does SW work for Cox Cable, or is the Reader owned by Cox? Anytime he writes about TV he lists the COX CABLE channels of Stations...when Cox covers such a small area of which these stations cover. SW ever hear of Time Warner, Direct TV, or Dishnetwork, or people who watch Free TV with an antenna?
