World-Herald Isn't Finished
With UNO Finances Story

Courtesy of Mavpuck.comThe body blow the Omaha World-Herald dealt today to the University of Nebraska at Omaha with an in-depth examination of expense reimbursement by former Vice Chancellor Jim Buck will not be the last front page story that further embarasses UNO.

World-Herald reporter Henry Cordes will follow up his investigation of the athletic department with another story in the newspaper's Sunday edition. This one reportedly examines spending by current Chancellor Nancy Belck.

To date, the World-Herald has published more than three dozen stories regarding the controversy surrounding the elimination of five positions from the UNO athletic department.

The OWH has put a lot of time and resources into their investigative reports on the university. Too bad all that work is for nothing as the circulation of this once-respectable publication declines month after month, along with its reputation. I'm quite surprised that they still even offer an afternoon edition.

The ignorance and lack of respect shown in the comment above further illustrates a picture of the immature and misinformed mentality of some folks here in Omaha. The Omaha World-Herald IS and always has been a respectable publication and to assume anything less than that would be ignorant and biased on the part of those who believe otherwise.

Don't prosecute or slander a publication just because it is democratic, objective and may not be in line with 'your' views and beliefs. At times, the readers and viewers here in Omaha seem to lack an understanding of the socio-economic issues and history of this city.

And most certainly, the person who posted the comment above is clearly jaded and uneducated on what a good, respectable reputation means for a publication, otherwise he or she wouldn't have posted such a remark here on this online blog because neither Ted Brockman's nor this online forum represent any good standards of respectable and reputable publication/public relations. Think before you post!

In response to the above the poster "O-Newsie," the second comment posted did not ask the reader to refrain from posting any such comments, it clearly was a response to the otherwise jaded and misinformed reader who certainly lacks respect for such a reputable publication.

On the matter of ignorance and slander, O-Newsie, it is you who has the ignorance to front such an irresponsible remark and clearly describes just what kind of person you are.

We are all entitled to the right of free speech and the second poster had every right to his or her own opinion. The first poster needed to be put in his or her place and the following comment just called him/her out on it.

And perhaps you should refrain from posting such comments that are meaningless and have no point to them whatsoever in the matter in which you so quickly come to the rescue to other posters, defending them.

It is not wise to incur the wrath of those who defend the media, moreso people who are more educated and more informed than those individuals such as yourself "O-Newsie."

Let me add my own closing thought to this unfortunate exchange of jabs. I have worked at The Omaha World-Herald for several years, so I think I am qualified to respond to this commentary.

The first Anonymous poster did not say anything that could be legally construed as "libelous" or "slanderous." Therefore, the sympathetic Anonymous poster #2 was incorrect.

With regards to Anonymous #1's comments: perhaps our publication isn't as prominent as it once was. However, we have a dedicated team working diligently to produce the best product we can, given the fact that the print medium is on a decline.

"O-Newsie" was correct in his/her definition of SLANDER. Though the language was a bit harsh, so was "Anonymous" #2's rebuttal. While it is certainly apparent that this poster has a passion for the OWH and wants to defend its legitimacy, this poster should refrain from over-reaction to differing opinions. At the same time, "O-Newsie," who, it seems, was defending the original poster's right to comment, should have refrained from resorting to name-calling to make his/her point. What is this...a political campaign???

This all makes for great drama, but it speaks nothing of the original topic, which was the blogger's statement of the investigation of UNO athletics controversy by the Omaha World-Herald.

Too often, those who comment on blogs take any opportunity to launch attacks on subjects that are not quite related to the original topic of discussion. This particular instance snow-balled into something quite ugly. In the end, the point is lost and neither side succeeds in making one's point.

It's unfortunate that no one sees the real issue here. University of Nebraska at Omaha officials are using university funds to wine and dine to their hearts content. As a student at UNO, this infuriates me. And the fact that Belck has not released any sort of statement to the students of UNO upsets me even more. Where else is the money disappearing?
