Severe Weather Coverage Cuts Into Huskers
Nebraska football fans hoping to catch uninterrupted coverage of the Nebraska-USC game made it nearly to the second half before KETV (Cox Channel 9) meteorologist John Campbell broke in with news of tornado warnings issued for the Newswatch 7 viewing area.
When KETV went to "split-screen" coverage of the football game and its severe weather coverage, some viewers in the Omaha metropolitcan area may have grabbed their radio hoping to catch audio coverage from the Pinnacle Sports Network. However, KFAB dumped out of the broadcast in order to provide weather coverage, anchored by weekday evening talk show host Tom Becka.
With about two minutes remaining in the third quarter, KETV dropped its split screen coverage, in order to allow viewers to watch (and hear) the Nebraska-USC broadcast with no interruptions.

My favorite part of the game coverage was when Jim Rose spoke the words, "Booty really took a lickin' on that play!"
Boot Lickin? Awesome.
Booty Lickin' I meant. Damn bad typing.
I can only imagine how pissed Husker fans would have been to have their game interrupted by Becka's irritating voice.
O-Newsie...
While the idea of using Weather Now to post severe weather info might be good, there's problems with doing so.
Think of the information that was being broadcast LIVE on TV. Weather Now couldn't possibly be continuously updated to keep current with the way that storm was moving along. Weather Now is not up-to-the-minute...updated regularly, yes, but not intended for more than that.
If I had to choose between the TV broadcast or Weather Now, I'd go with the TV. If I wasn't by a TV, I'd go for a radio.
O Newsie, Personally I cant think of anything more irritating than your recent posts. Is the information Becka was passing radically different from what a news anchor would have done ? Your insights are especially meaningful since you've informed us that you weren't even listening to the radio
last night
While WeatherNow is an important part of our coverage, it's still in its infancy stage. However, I can guaruntee the next time there is severe weather the thing will be lit up with the latest severe weather information.
On Saturday, a new computer was installed and there was a software problem with it that didn't become evident until the severe weather broke. The software wasn't ingesting any of the warnings/watches/etc that were being issued. It's fixed now. It's just unfortunate that it happened yesterday...
John Campbell
O-Newsie is definitely beginning to get annoying as his/her posts are nothing but meaningless, nit-picking entries that have no value or respect for those in the profession. If you're going to offer criticism, make it "constructional" -- don't be a Ted Brockman (Sean Weide) who offers up nothing but blatant slander, rude and vicious attacks on those who work in the media. If you think you can do a better job, go to college, get an education and work your way up in the ranks!
Don't sit back and be a sore loser because there's already enough of those out in the world.
--on the flipside, I thought the severe weather coverage on every channel (including KPTM) was excellent. Channel 7 gave it their best effort, attempting to keep viewers in the loop during the Husker Football game. WOWT, KMTV and KPTM equally did their best as well. KFAB did a wonderful job as well.
I just hate it when people knock the media, especially during Severe Weather Coverage-- when they are all trying to do their best to keep viewers and the general public safe! Where's the respect? And why the hell were you watching the TV or listening to the radio anyways O-Newsie? You should've been down in the basement, in the event of a house coming out of the sky and landing right on top of you.
Good grief!
hehe
Wx coverage was very good Saturday night. KFAB did a good job with Tom Becka, though I was also surprised to hear him on. What is important is that he kept us informed.
O-Newsie's comments may have been uncalled for, but anyone may comment here, as well as on most blogs (unless you try to express an opposing opinion on Brockman's blog). Anonymous needs to chill. The best way to thwart the effect of one's comments is to respond with...nothing. That way, they'll never know they got to ya.
Once again more great advice from O-Newsie. If you don't like it, don't read it. We're not doing anything different than you --reading the blog and its comments-- and commenting ourselves. In that spirit let me say that I agree with the others -- your comments are irritating. But feel free to keep posting and we will feel free to respond. However Im not sure why John Campbell felt he had to respond to your anonymous post.
I was happy to see the TV and hear the radio stations understand the public service dimension of keeping people safe and informed. I was quite interested when severe weather was forecast for Saturday night to see what KFAB and KETV would do. Great coverage by all!
