Who Was First?

Both KMTV (Cox Channel 5) and WOWT (Cox Channel 8) claim to have been first on the scene of the pursuit and shots fired that stemmed from the robbery of a check-cashing business.

Action 3 News reporters were first to have pictures live of where the chase ended, as well as being first to report live from the scene of the robbery. WOWT reportedly did not have its live truck on the scene until after Dave Roberts had completed his first on-air report.

WOWT's "First Reponse" team consisted of reporters Brian Mastre (who suffered from a microphone glitch on the 4 p.m. newscast) and Jaime McCutcheon.

Can someone in the business please explain to me why so much attention was drawn to this incident?

You would have thought the Nebraska football team had another defection with the way the story was treated on the evening news. No one was hurt, three people were arrested and the chase didn't even happen during rush hour or on busy streets.

Sure, a guy was on the loose but I haven't seen Amber Alerts get that much attention.

Anytime officers are involved in a shooting there is always this much attention, in any city!

Uhhh... last time I checked, Action 3 and KETV were the only ones running a "Breaking News" ticker at the bottom of their screen. I don't know what station
"operationseng" was watching. Get your facts straight! Shootings whether they involve injury or not always are top priority when there is no other "Breaking News" or "Hard" news happening. What else is the media going to cover? I certainly hope they don't favor coverage of a City Council Meeting over a police chase and shooting. That would be a disservice to the public. Come on folks, get your heads in the game and at least try to undertstand what the definition of "breaking" news is here in Omaha.

Anonymous #2:

You can stop watching Oprah now.

Anonymous #1:

I've lived in larger cities and they DO NOT devote this much time to these events. Me thinks someone needs to get out of Omaha a bit more often.

Anonymous 2,

I was also watching Jeopardy and saw the crawl. Where were you at?

The news in Omaha actually serves the public?

You may be right about the crawls on all THREE stations, but it seems as if everyone always picks on WOWT. They're number one for a reason. Talent, quality and content. WOWT doesn't sensationalize the news like KETV and ACTION 3 do. Simple, Clean, Clear and Straightforward. The news does serve the public to the smart-ass who posted above. Anyone who doesn't believe that is misinformed and isn't qualified to comment on issues dealing with the media. It's 2006, the news certainly served the public on 9/11 and it certainly does a hell of a job during Severe Weather and other Breaking News events. I cannot believe the lack of respect and disregard people have for the media in Omaha. If you don't care for the news, turn your televisions
off and find something better to do. Good grief!

Actually the reason that we are probably misinformed is BECAUSE of the media in this town. If anyone in Omaha is informed, it certainly isn't because of the newscasts but despite them. C'mon bud, get a sense of humor already and laugh with the rest of us. It isn't that serious.

Why would we want to turn our televisions off? This is the best entertainment money can't buy. We've never seen so many foppish individuals performing at such mediocre standards as the people on air in this city; WOWT included. And if you think they have the best talent...well...what alternate universe or bizarro world are you living in?

To all four news stations:

Thank you for your wonderful commitment to informing the people of Omaha with Weather, News and Sports. You are all fairly classy people and work hard to keep us informed. There are still people out here who appreciate you.

I don't know whether the comment above should be perceived as being a serious one or just a smart-ass comment by an individual who certainly lacks character. WOWT clearly does not have the best talent, but neither does Action 3 or Channel 7. KPTM has good talent but lacks quality of content. The Omaha area will always be a two-station competitve market. WOWT will most likely continue to be at the top of the ratings despite their talent and quality of product because of the mindset of many viewers, particularly the "older" generation who are very "loyal" to Channel 6. They don't want and clearly don't like change. One of the reasons why WOWT is so successful is because they clearly haven't changed. Only recently have they added new music and new graphics. Over the last several years-- KMTV, KETV and KPTM have consistently altered their look, music, station ID's, talent, and quality of content/product to keep up with the competition and the ratings certainly don't reflect any enormous jump or change. WOWT is the longest-running television station in Nebraska and it will always be at the top of the ratings despite whatever the competition may do. It's sad, but it's the truth.

I agree with the above anonymous poster. WOWT has not changed and it is that lack of change that keeps people watching. They have had the steadiest anchor team on their evening newscasts. This is why people tune in to them. These people are familiar with the Omaha area and have been here most of their careers. They are "trusted" and have become like members of the family to the community. When the other stations are able to accomplish this feat and their anchor and weather positions are not an open door, then perhaps they might overtake WOWT. It's not the look, it's the people that keep viewers coming back to Channel 6. Go 6.

The above poster is an idiot. Six sucks.

The above poster needs a "newsflash" -- you must be a Channel 7 or Action 3 supporter. You got it all wrong. If you wanna start shaming people for their comments, go on over to the Omaha news blog! If you have any intelligence whatsoever, you would know that the comments posted above are pretty much the truth. You only say "Six sucks" because you must be an employee of a competing station. Come on now, let's not be a baby because the competition is shoving it to you raw. Once again, WOWT will always be at the top of the ratings!

I stand by my comment. The above poster is an idiot. Six sucks.
And no I'm not affiliated with any stations.

If 6 is the people's choice for Omaha, it just goes to show why this city is bland, boring and dull. The newscast is a reflection on the city itself.

As one of the above posters said; "if you don't like what you are watching turn the television off." My goodness people, it isn't that difficult. Also, can't anyone say anything nice?! Please, there is enough negativity in the world as it is. Can't we live by the old adage; "If you can't say something nice don't say anything at all."?

I concurr. If you don't have anything nice to say about the media, then don't say anything at all. I'm sick and tired of posters who have no respect for the local news operations in Omaha. If you think you can do a better job, send in a tape and a resume. People who call it how they see it are misinformed, uneducated and furthermore lack the ability to appropriately comment on issues within the media. I realize this is America and FREE SPEECH should be honored, but please people, come on, enough with the bashing, criticism and such! It is ridiculous to expect such high-quality and perfect work from this (Omaha) market. I'm not saying that every station doesn't produce a high-quality product, just look at the city. We are market 75, Des Moines, Iowa is larger, absolutely wonderful talent is hard to find and the standards for today's journalism are more defined in the methods and techniques in writing and producing a newscast rather than from a pool of anchors/reporters. Don't get me wrong-- on-camera talent is important, but it's the ability to write and produce a flawless newscast that is key to being successful. Quality individuals that turn in great work come and go. Just remember; people working in the "News" are humans too. They make mistakes! We all are not perfect, except for those who really think they are God's greatest gift and lack identity. It is important to realize that many of these news operations function on a limited budget and are strained of resources due to corporate greed. That's not an excuse for some of the "shit" we've seen here on Omaha airwaves but to expect more than mediocre work is ridiculous! Good Lord people, wake up and realize we are not in Chicago, LA or New York.
